FALLING ELEVATORS (falling-elevators.com)

GLEN was formed in 2015 in Berlin, Germany.
CRACK is their first album release.

As a mostly instrumental band with classic line up of two guitars, bass and drums, GLEN deconstructs popular and classical music genres scratching them together with experimental expression and attitude. GLEN revises the supposedly light atmosphere of melodic fragments to a complex epic multilayered hypnotic structure of free improvisation and repetitive themes, breaking loose either to dionysian chaos or escaping to poetic cinematic soundscapes. Adding layer by layer, GLEN creates a synthesis of contrasting textures with different references to No Wave NY, Free Improv, Noise, Doom, Postrock as well as Cinematic Scores merging to a unique sound of colourful narratives and surprising mosaics of rhythmic dissonant chords, melodic patterns and abstract noise.

about
While GLEN ́s previous album CRACK “switched in and out of different moods with a sense of widescreen dynamics and penchant for extended narratives that were shaped by their cinematic endeavours”, their new album PULL! is even more consistent in their wandering through the glens of nearly unmarketable instrumental elegies rejecting despite their haunting melodies any assignment to traditional rock aesthetics, similar to the uncompromising deconstructing energy of the avant-rock movement citing “there are no waves, only the ocean”.

Eclectic guitar sculptures on PULL! loom up to elegant mesmerizing structures of free improvisation, meditative minimalism and multidimensional layered soundscapes. Pursuing an abrasive reductionism GLEN merges disparate styles and contrasting textures to a unique sound of tempting narratives, vertiginous swelling dissonant chords, melodic patterns and abstract noise.

PULL! was mixed by german producer legend MACK, who started his career in Giorgio Moroder ́s Musicland Studios working with bands like Marc Bolan ́s T. Rex, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, early Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Sparks, etc. and of course became famous as the producer of Queen.

Glen – Crack

Glen - Crack

Crack opens with the kind of psychedelic rock that has seemingly existed since the dawn of time (or somewhere around 1972) in all corners of the known universe. Or perhaps Berlin in the case of Glen, a quartet who like to slather their effects on the guitar, bend and fluffle its strings and set the controls for the heart of whatever planet they are tripping to on this particular occasion.

With no track under six minutes and a couple peaking at a smidge over sixteen, Crack has plenty of room to sprawl comfortably, but without overstaying its back and forth welcome. Even though there’s plenty of Guru Guru-like martial drums and steady builds of guitar and bass on opener “Hit”, these can take so long to arrive that when they do — and inevitably start swinging their hefty groove — that they almost explode with anticipation and freak out in finely rocking style. If that sounds like there are few surprises in store for the Desertfest-going stoner, head-nodding post-rocker or the kosmischeafficionado, then there probably aren’t too many on Crack as such, but Glen do like to mix up and reorder influences and styles. There’s mellow runs and twin stereo guitar action that leaves a cheery feeling on side-by-side chanted vocals as the band hit their stride for “Go Boy”. Then there’s the long-form guitar-bass-drums circumlocutions of “D”, with its drop in, out and back into easy, dubby skank sections and soaring guitar solos that are just about heavy enough on the chorus pedal, making it an amiable and engaging construction that knows when enough is enough.

https://playloud.org/archiveandstore/trailers/glen_crack/trailercode.htmlThe up-tempo rhythms and chirpy sking guitars that run along fluently while the title track’s spoken words of Eleni Ampelakiotou‘s story unwinds gradually and peripatetically. Her words eventually becomes absorbed into the by-now coruscating musical backdrop, while occasional interruptions prevent things from flowing too smoothly, Wilhlem Stegmeier quoting Leonard Cohen‘s lines about how “There’s a crack in everything / That’s how the light gets in” along the way. The duo exchange words again for the suitably energetic stop-start hi-hat-driven frissons of “Discothèque”, ranting about “Ice cubes in a plastic bag”, while the LP plays out in a frenzy of post-punkish chants of “Up, up, up and down” and further scripted dialogue about the recording of the album that takes Crack firmly into metatextual imaginary soundtrack territory.

This variety allows Crack to switch in and out of different moods as the band let themselves play expansively, with a sense of widescreen dynamics and penchant for storytelling that are probably helped in their cinematic endeavours by both Stegmeier’s background in soundtrack composition and Ampelakiotou’s experiences as a film-maker. There may be few surprises here, but Glen play with gusto, and would undoubtedly make an entertaining live experience too.

Glen – Crack « Freq

Brilliant German instrumental post rock band, using layered textures of experimental, psychedelic, doom, stonner, art-rock, neo-krautrock, avant, drone, progressive, groove, noise, on a cinematic background.

His melodies are long, well-structured, multifaceted, immersive, travelers, marked by distorted, loud, high-pitched, precise riffs, a low doom-style bass and a percussion in both times with rhythmic dissonant chords, melodic patterns and abstract noise.

His debut album, CRACK has five intense, immersive, creative melodies, full of details in an impressive and shattering space psychedelic landscape with improvised and refined chords and arpeggios.

PULL !, released in 07 of mid-2021, has four melodies, immersive, harmonious, intense, refined, complex, with beautiful arrangements of riffs that duel with each other, marked by bass and percussion, sliding in a smooth and increasing cadence and environment that captures and concentrates feelings of euphoria in a rich soundscape in detail with a stupendous creation.

An impressive album that shows a technical and performatic potential that borders on genius by the mix of styles and genres used, and with the mastery in the execution of the arrangements, I recommend
