McKay, Sean and Dan played together in an indie-rock band until early 2016, but due to a toxic relationship with the vocalist the band decided to part ways. The 3 remained friends and their love of post-rock music made it an easy transition to get back together and start a strictly instrumental rock band. Free from that toxicity, the creative process flowed much more organically for all of them and it didn’t take long to complete their debut album in early 2017.

McKay’s background as a guitarist and bassist is more historically punk and alternative, which is in stark contrast to Sean’s death metal roots both as a drummer and guitarist. Dan’s background was as a guitarist in mostly alternative rock and folk bands, but he has fully loved his transition to bass, as well as still contributing in production with synth and guitar parts.

2019 brought several changes. Sean had to move away, so the band brought on a very talented guitarist and shortly after a new drummer as well. The band met fellow post-rocker Kyson Van Dyke in 2018 when they played a show along with his prior band. They were very impressed with his chops and sound, and are honored that he accepted the invitation to join the group. He’s the kind heart and true joy of the band.

The band has gone through a few drummers over the years while looking for the right fit that aligns with the overall vision, goals, and style of the group. After some ups and downs they finally found the match that was always meant to be when they finally hooked up with Samuel Dumont. His talent, energy, and beautiful personality gave the group new hope and excitement for sharing their music with the world.

There were big plans in effect for 2020 that included a U.S. tour that was going to be capped off by playing at Post.Fest in the Fall. Obviously, the pandemic had other plans for the band. The biggest silver lining for the year had to be when the band decided they’d bring on some extra sound into the group with a synth player and vocalist. Kate Hoffmeister, friend of the band, stepped up to the plate and we’ve all been enamored by her talent and sound. We can’t wait to share with the world what we cooked up. Newest Album set to be released on July 22, 2021.

The concept of growth towards something better, to move on from past mistakes, tragedy or darkness is a path fraught with continued struggle. But in retrospect, as a tree cycles through the seasons, each with its respective challenges, the subtle growth over time is monumental.

Reviews

Local Review: Black Flak and the Nightmare Fighters – Once We Knew the World Well – SLUG Magazine

Bright post rock band from Salt Lake City, Utah.
They use layered textures of experimental, progressive, dark, alternative, neo classic, indie, on a cinematic background.

Its melodies are long, complex, immersive, multifaceted, with an exquisite refinement and refinement in chords and arpeggios, with beautiful fingerings in counterpoint with an enveloping, whispering and creepy voice, full of sliding riffs, high, precise, distorted, marked by a jutting bass with intense and powerful drums on both beats and a cinematic dark ambient keyboard.

His latest release “Ad Meliora” is a masterpiece intertwined in creativity and ambiguous feelings that show a soundscape full of details that border on brilliance, surpassing his stupendous debut concept album “Once We Knew the World Well”.

Without a doubt, it is the best album of the year, an explosion of feelings reflected in arrangements with an amazing mastery and resourcefulness, capable of absorbing our attention from the first note uttered.
